The Legend of the Koi / La leyenda del Koi

Bound to the water, the koi is born to the current, denied the open sky, yet climbing the river against its pull. In the old story the fish that endures the ascent turns into a dragon, and here is read as transformation earned through effort, never simply granted. To leave the water is not to betray it but to be changed by the struggle to rise. Oranges, reds and whites of the koi cut through a ground of moving water rendered in cool, worked layers. The current is built with texture —eddies and ripples pressed into the surface— so the realist fish seems to fight a background that is all motion. The palette holds fire and water at once, a dragon already latent in the fish's scales. Acrylic and oil on canvas · 50 × 70 cm (19.7 × 27.6 in) · 2026.

Preso del agua, el koi es nacido a la corriente, negado al cielo abierto, y aun así remontando el río contra su empuje. En la vieja historia, el pez que resiste el ascenso se convierte en dragón, y aquí se lee como una transformación ganada con esfuerzo, nunca concedida sin más. Dejar el agua no es traicionarla, sino salir cambiado de la lucha por subir. Los naranjas, rojos y blancos del koi rasgan un fondo de agua en movimiento, resuelto en capas frías y trabajadas. La corriente se construye con textura —remolinos y ondas impresos en la superficie— de modo que el pez realista parece pelear contra un fondo que es puro movimiento.
