Vortex combines two things that rarely sit together: a dense, earth-toned structure and a shower of pure, saturated colour. The composition turns around a central spiral, swept out with broad brown, olive and ochre strokes that curve inward and pull the whole surface into rotation. Caught inside that movement are hundreds of hard-edged shards — cobalt, violet, cadmium yellow, coral red, teal and cream — painted crisply on top so that they seem suspended in the turning ground, like fragments of glass in slow water. Around the outer edge the palette lifts into soft peach and pink, opening the picture and stopping the darkness from closing it in. The tension between the muted rotating structure and the bright fragments is what gives the painting its charge; it is the most complex composition of this abstract collection and it rewards being hung where it can be looked at closely, at eye level in a hall or study. La composición gira en torno a una espiral central, barrida con anchas pinceladas pardas, oliva y ocres que se curvan hacia dentro y arrastran toda la superficie a la rotación. Atrapadas en ese movimiento hay centenares de esquirlas de canto duro —cobalto, violeta, amarillo de cadmio, rojo coral, turquesa y crema— pintadas con nitidez encima, de modo que parecen suspendidas en el fondo que gira, como fragmentos de vidrio en agua lenta. Hacia el borde exterior la paleta se aclara en melocotón y rosa suaves, abriendo el cuadro e impidiendo que la oscuridad lo cierre. La tensión entre la estructura rotatoria apagada y los fragmentos brillantes es lo que da carga a la pintura; es la composición más compleja de la actual colección abstracta y agradece colgarse donde pueda mirarse de cerca, a la altura de los ojos, en un recibidor o un estudio.
